Abstract

On retracing the genesis of figurative-geographical vision of the world from archaic societies up to our times, the author passes over to analyzing the geopolitics of images as purposeful self-positioning and manipulation of specialized geographical images in mental-geographical space. It is demonstrated in the article in which way it proves possible, by resorting to the geopolitics of images, to interpret significant events, as well as to produce meta-expanses that can influence such events and even determine them. Great attention is paid by the author to the dynamics of Russia’s geopolitics of images. Describing the conglomeration of images that are of key significance for the country, he then examines the intensity of their use in the country’s foreign policy in the years of 1991 to 2001. In conclusion, the author presents a brief survey of promising orientations in the formation of Russia’s metageopolitical expanse.
