This article analyzes the content and approaches to the study of Russian political culture from the standpoint of modern heuristic potential of historical and political sciences presented in the book by Alexander Lukin and Pavel Lukin “Umom Rossiyu ponimat’”. The authors – a historian and a political scientist – seek to present an objective and unbiased analysis of post-Soviet Russia political culture phenomenology through a historical retrospective of its such crucial periods, as the history of Novgorod and the Soviet era. One of the authors of the reviewed monograph is a medievalist, specialist on the study of the “West” and speaks European languages having worked in Germany and Eastern Europe; the other author is a political scientist and is committed to the study of the “East,” enjoying extensive experience in the studies of the UK, the USA, and China. Their proficiency in different languages, ability to involve a variety of sources and literature, in-depth knowledge of quite dissimilar historical and cultural traditions have helped the authors to complement each other in their desire to look at Russia with as much objectivity as it is possible.
