It has been attempted in the article to apply chronopolitics as methodology of the research of modernization processes in contemporary Serbia. The author demonstrates that political changes in the said country always did and do take the lead over development of social relations and it is just this heightened dynamism of political as compared with social time that has led Serbian society to a nonplus. In consequence of persistent conservation of traditions in the sphere of everyday life, the social “platform” upon which the elite tries to erect the edifice of a higher civilization, proves to be diluted, turns out to be of a ‘fluid’ character. The far-reaching and many-sided influence of traditionalism on what is going on in society deprives the social transformation process of its inner dynamics and, as a result, the process turns out to be reduced to some renovation of the stage set. As is concluded by the author, the political and intellectual elite of the country faces today the complicated task of working out new forms of the socium’s organization, answering the population’s temporal attitude and at the same time acceptable for the liberally oriented external environment.
