The article was prepared within the framework of the grant of the Ministry of Education and Science No. 075-15-2020-930 to support the world-class scientific “Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Human Potential”.
The article is devoted to the analysis of the Big Mediterranean macroregion. Countries within this macroregion share historical, cultural and geographic features. The Big Mediterranean consists of countries on the shores of the Mediterranean that share common evolutionary processes. The authors of the article describe the theoretical bases of a region and a macroregion in order to single out criteria to determine whether the countries within the macroregion are alike or not. After this step, a data set of 70 indicators divided into 6 groups (international influence, politics, economy, standard of living, demography and values) was gathered. With the use of spatial analysis and Moran’s index of spatial autocorrelation, local neighbor match test, as well as cluster analysis, the states of the macroregion were clustered based on the indicators. The authors come to conclusion that within this macroregion several regions are interconnected which formed clusters. Concurrently within mathematical analysis it was shown that currently the countries have a small number of similarities that are crucial when constructing a microregion. However, this does not put into question the fact that all the countries within the region have the same historical, cultural and geographic origins.
